LADIES WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP - 8th-13th APRIL 2011 (05/04/2011 @ 18:49:07)

World Ladies Billiards & Snooker Association press release

GREEN-baize queens from around the globe descend on Bury St Edmunds this week for the Greene King World Ladies Snooker Championship.

It’s the first time the Suffolk market town has hosted the World Ladies Billiards & Snooker Association’s season finale.

Main Tour professionals Joe Perry, Michael Holt and Martin Gould make guest appearances on Friday (April 8) in the World Mixed Pairs, which kicks off six days of top-quality action at the Pot Black Sports Bar.

The round-robin stage of the main competition starts at 10am on Saturday (April 9) with the final scheduled for noon on Wednesday (April 13).

The eventual champion will pocket £1,000 and the runner-up £500. Prize money will also be paid down to the last-16.

Red-hot favourite Reanne Evans is bidding for a record seventh straight world title. And to extend her record 84-match unbeaten run on the WLBSA circuit

Attempting to de-throne the undisputed world number one are world number two Maria Catalano, Ronnie O’Sullivan’s 29-year-old cousin; Portsmouth’s Emma Bonney, who is also seeking a fourth successive billiards title; and Kent’s Katie Henrick, who is ranked fourth.

Leading the overseas threat is Hong Kong’s impressive 20-year-old Ng On Yee, the 2009 and 2010 IBSF Women’s World Champion.

Also flying in from Hong Kong are Jaique Ip Wan In, who lost to Ng in the 2010 IBSF final, Yu Ching Ching and So Man Yan.

Two-time world billiards champion Chitra Magimairaj, who jets in from India, said her biggest motivation was seeing her home country winning cricket’s world cup. Magimairaj is joined in Bury St Edmunds by her compatriot Revanna Umadevi.

Spearheading the European challenge is Latvian number one Tatjana Vasiljeva and eight-time German national champion Natascha Niermann, now based in Cambridge.

From the world of pool comes England international Fran Calvert and two-time European champion Kim O’Brien.

Favourite to clinch a fourth straight junior title is the phenomenal 14-year-old Derby schoolgirl Hannah Jones, the world number six.

Ron Agnew is sponsoring the billiards to the tune of £600. The eventual champion will also receive a year’s free subscription to all English-Billiards Open Series (EBOS) tournaments, a package worth £200. Website www.englishBilliards.org is offering £100 for the highest break.

STEVE DAVIS NIGHT - REPORT (10/02/2010 @ 19:56:57)

6 times World Champion Steve Davis provided an outstanding evening of entertainment at The Pot Black Sports Bar on Saturday. Playing in front of a sell out crowd, Steve played some great snooker, but was pushed to the final black on two occasions - once by Saffron Walden champion Adam Ingram, and also by 11 year old Newmarket junior player Kurt Brewer, who doubled the black ball to rapturous applause in what was one of the highlights of the evening!

Steve finished off with some trick shots and funny stories from the snooker world, and spent another hour signing autographs and chatting to anyone and everyone before he left. Steve is the ultimate professional and we thank him for a fantastic evening.

The problem we have now is how do we follow this next year??? Your suggestions are welcome...

THE 'WHIRLWIND' TAKES A BREAK AT SPORTS BAR (01/02/2009 @ 19:34:14)

Snooker fans enjoyed a 'legendary night' at Pot Black Sports Bar, in Bury St Edmunds, on Monday, when one of the sport's top names whirled into action.

Jimmy 'Whirlwind' White MBE helped to officially relaunch the club, in Eastgate Street, playing nine frames against a few select members and Chris Pike, the lucky winner of a Bury Free Press competition.

FANTASTIC: Pot Black owner Andy Goodridge and management team Phil Mumford, Claire Gibbons, Jimmy White and Bury Free Press competition winner Chris Pike

"It was a legendary night," said club owner Andy Goodridge. "Jimmy was fantastic. He hit three century breaks. He played nine frames of snooker – he gave everyone a 50 point start and nobody could beat him."

One of the frames was raffled for Jimmy's chosen charity, the Royal Marsden Hospital, raising £220.

Following the success of Monday's event, Andy said he was planning to get another big name to the club.

"Everybody kept saying Steve Davis. We shall see. We hope this is the first of a series of nights, with not just big names in snooker, but probably darts and pool as well," he said

ANDY BACK AS BOSS AFTER 20-YEAR BREAK (26/12/2008 @ 19:36:15)

Published Date:
26 December 2008

Golf professional Andy Goodridge is hoping to prove he is just as comfortable potting as he is putting – after taking over the snooker club where he once cleaned tables.
The former golf county junior champion and ex-county golfer has taken over Pot Black snooker club, in Eastgate Street, Bury St Edmunds.

"I once had a 96 break, so I'm fairly good at snooker as well. I'm happy with either green," said the fully qualified PGA golfer.

The takeover of Pot Black marks a returns to the club for 41-year-old Mr Goodridge after an absence of 20 years.
"As a 20-year-old I used to clean the tables at Pot Black, working for Chris and Yvonne Barnet. Then I went upstairs to work for Bury Bowl as assistant manager for four years before setting up the Bury Golf Range in 1992, which I still run."
Mr Barnet died 12 years ago and when Mrs Barnet decided she wanted to retire, Mr Goodridge decided to return to the club.
"I've been looking for a challenge for some time. Its great to be back – it is exciting times," he said.
Staff from Pot Black have been kept on, although Mr Goodridge has appointed a new manager in European billiards champion Phil Mumford.
The club is currently undergoing a refurbishment of its function room, restaurant, 24 snooker/pool tables and sports bar but has remained open throughout the work.
It is set to relaunch on January 26, with Jimmy 'Whirlwind' White coming along to play a select few players and sign autographs. Tickets for the night start at £20 and are available by ringing 704231.
